The Magic of Music
I think we are all aware of the influence that music has on us, especially during our formidable growing years. I was thinking of this the other day when I heard a particular song and it took me back to another time in an instant. There are several songs that have that effect on me, and I’m sure it’s the same with everyone else. For instance, when I hear the song ‘Pretty Woman’ by Roy Orbison, I immediately think of riding in back of Mr. Meekins car, who was the manager of our little league baseball team as we were on our way to the playoffs. Even now, I can picture myself sitting in the back seat of his big Oldsmobile.
Another song that instantly brings to mind thoughts of Cape May, N.J., is the song ‘Band of Gold’ by Freda Payne. It was the first time I had ever been to the ocean, and it brings to mind all the sights and sounds of that place during a time when I had little exposure of anything outside of our Baltimore neighborhood. Closer to home, a couple of songs that transport me back to Dan’s Sub Shop are the songs ‘Everlasting Love’ by Robert Knight, and ‘Do it Again’ by the Beach Boys, a song that a very pretty teenage girl would play whenever she was there at Dan’s. There are some other songs that have that effect, and I’m certain that all of us can say the same. It is quite amazing how the combination of mind, memory and music all work together to allow us to instantly recall different times in our lives that had some significance for us. What would the world be without the Magic of Music?
