Out With The Old, In With the New
Another New Year’s Eve has come and gone, and I hardly noticed as I was in bed by about 11:30, as I just couldn’t hang until midnight. Not that it really mattered as it just doesn’t seem to be a big deal any longer. When I was a youngster we use to celebrate New Year’s by going outside with a pot and a pan or some other metal device and would bang them together. Some people would set off firecrackers and others would have sparklers, but that was about it. Nowadays, the brothers in Baltimore have a different way of celebrating as many bring out their pistols and fire shots in the air, ‘I fired a bullet in the air, where it fell, I know not where’. Yep, a different way of bringing in the New Year for sure.
When I got to be a bit older and of drinking age, my brother and I would hit the neighborhood bars and celebrate with friends. There were so many bars in the area that you really didn’t have to go out of the neighborhood to have a good time, and since the bars stayed open all night, you had the opportunity to hit most of them.
One year I wandered down to the Inner Harbor with a couple of friends and it was probably one of the worst New Year’s that I can recall as it was a very cold night and was so crowded that you had to move in unison with the crowd, not even being able to see where your feet were going. It was the first and the last time that I celebrated New Year’s down at the Baltimore Harbor, fireworks be damned.
Yes, things have changed in the many years since I was a kid. Nowadays I’m not interested in getting out and about on New Year’s but content to say home and turn it early, and don’t have to watch out for those objects that shot into the air, must eventually fall back to earth.
